This sub sector encompasses all agriculture based functions within the informal sector, ranging from agricultural producers, processors and traders. In the country this sub-sector is huge and plays an important part in the livelihoods of millions of people in the rural and urban areas. It provides food security, employment and incomes to over 78% of the rural dwellers.

This sub-sector is faced by enormous challenges which need to be sorted out for food security to be guaranteed. Serious formalization and modernization efforts are essential to transform the value chains completely and even enable the players of the sector to join the formal sector of the economy. These actions would move millions of people out of poverty.
